Quietus: Geometric Shape Test

I'm the art director on a 3rd year film called Quietus, which is an experimental piece that will use projection mapping and other techniques. At the moment we are just beginning to plan out some initial tests and experiments to get the ball rolling. The story is pretty much finished, but still has plenty of room for new ideas and experimentation. This particular test was to see how this geometric shape character/element would be created and formed in After Effects, Maya being an alternative.
 I used crisp layered shapes and symmetry following a design of Nick's, adding some simple mask and scale tweening to reveal the shapes. A soft horizontal blur and partially transparent line pattern help blend the layers together. Lastly I applied a little lens distortion when the shapes form to make it bulge out and appear less flat.
